5.26.05 — Bloom!
It's dark out, and I can't take a picture, so you'll have to trust me — my daylilies are blooming! I've had a lot of buds over the past two weeks, and this morning on the way to work I noticed my first bloom! When I got home, I had four! Thanks to Nancy, Jenn and Louise for such a wonderful gift!

Speaking of Nancy, you should really consider donating to her Race for the Cure effort. Don't delay — the event is June 4th!

5.25.05 — Yarn Harlot
Staying on topic, here's a great knitting blog that I read on a regular basis. In addition to being a great knitter, she's also a very talented writer. And funny! I am amazed at how she just dives into new sock projects so easily, as they scare the death out of me! My only sock adventure was using too thick yarn on too large needles resulting in a sock too big for Big Foot himself. Maybe after summer I'll try and tackle my sock fear. For now, you can read about all of her sock adventures here.

5.24.05 — *K1 P1 repeat from*
I've been knitting like crazy lately. Between prime time season finales and 8 Formula One races in the next 10 weeks, I'll be making a lot of progress on my projects. Most of these are presents for others, so I can't post photos until after they've been given. Stay tuned!

5.21.05 — One year later
The official anniversary date of the F4 that destroyed Hallam and caused severe damage in other parts of southern Nebraska is tomorrow. But it happened on a Saturday night. I remember coming home from the grocery store to make dinner for a friend. It was warm and sunny. A beautiful evening. We didn't even know it was supposed to storm later that evening. And here it is one year later, and we are under a tornado watch. We just came home from the grocery store and are cooking dinner. It is a warm and sunny evening.

A lot has happened in a year for us personally. We've learned a lot about severe Midwest weather. We have a weather radio and pay attention to storms. We turn on the television during warnings and cover the car to avoid hail damage. Most of all, we have a greater respect for Mother Nature. There is an eerie feeling to this evening. I can't even begin to imagine what it feels like for the people who lost everything in that tornado. Tomorrow's anniversary is a big step for them. Especially with severe weather in the forecast. But they are strong, focused on rebuilding and making progress. All the same, please say a prayer for them tonight, and keep them in your thoughts tomorrow.

5.21.05 — Allergy meds under lock and key
I buy a lot of sudafed during allergy season, which is the fall for me, and this is going to be a pain. However, given the meth problem in our city, it's probably the best thing to do. Some stores are already doing it voluntarily. I guess I should start stocking up now! I wonder if Sam's sells in bulk?

5.20.05 — D'Leons ditto
We are in BIG trouble, folks. A D'Leons has opened in South Lincoln and it's practically in our backyard. I can't begin to describe in writing how good their food tastes. Problem is, you know it can't be healthy. It's too good. No low-fat cheese or reduced-calorie sour cream here, and the refried beans have to be made with lard. Real lard. (Why does lard taste so good?)

Bottom line, the food is so cheap and sinful the only thing that kept us from eating there all the time was that it took so long to get there and back. 15 minutes to drive up, and 15-20 minutes in the drive thru lane (there's ALWAYS a line at the drive thru) and 15 minutes to drive home (there is no seating at the North Lincoln location). That's a lot of time to invest in mexican takeout. But now it's right around the corner! Drive through AND seating. And it's open 24/7. Must. Be. Strong.

And if you think we are gushing too much about mexican takeout, we're not the only ones. Pulled from a chat earlier today with a friend.*

me: hey, D'Leons is open and guess what...
friend: what WHAT!
me: it's open 24/7 also
friend: I just peed myself
me: LOL you just made me choke on my snack
friend: and I'm wearing jeans too
friend: oh my gawd, I'm so going to D'Leons this weekend

*Name has been changed to protect the innocent and D'Leons weak.

5.18.05 — Another Lincoln blog
This blogger says she is using her blog as a "serious journalistic tool", but I'm not sure how the entry on refrigerator grime fits into that. It might have something to do with one of her columns, but I can't find a link to them. It's part of our local paper's website, so you can also check out the latest headlines in Lincoln, learn all about our meth problem, and read up on Tommy Lee's semester at UNL. Where else can you find information on such diverse subjects all in one place?

5.17.05 — Back to normal
T is home safe and sound after his trip, and Chloe has ended her hunger strike. (Actually, she ended it two days ago when she realized that refusing to eat her crunchies wasn't going to bring back her favorite ankles to chew on.) So I'm watching TV and knitting, T is sitting in front of his computer checking out car stuff and Chloe is sleeping on her pillow. All is back to normal.

5.17.05 — Deep thoughts
We are under a wind advisory today. These Ol' Nebraska Winds have got me thinking about birds lately. Do birds that live in windy places have stronger, more developed muscles? On the flip side, maybe they are weaker because they can coast along in the wind more often. But, what if the wind isn't blowing in the direction they want to go?

5.16.05 — Apple crisp
What do you do if you have a bunch of apples on their last legs and you don't want to throw them away? Make Apple Crisp! I've made this recipe a few times and it always turns out great. I never have enough apples, but it doesn't seem to matter. Tonight I didn't even have an egg, but milk worked just fine. If only I had some vanilla ice cream!

5.14.05 — Girls Gone Mild
Today I went to my first Knitting Meetup. It's a group of local knitters who meet twice a month at The Mill in College View to chat and knit (that link is for The Mill downtown). I'll admit that I was nervous going by myself. Plus, I've only been knitting since December, and these ladies are fast with the needles! But everyone was so nice. The projects were as diverse as the ladies--socks, bags, a tank top, a sweater/scarf. The two hours flew by, and I'm looking forward to the next meeting in June.

5.14.05 — I'm back
For those of you who have been worried, rest assured that I have not been sitting on the deck for the past three months! Things have just been a bit crazy around here. As most of you are aware, T has started his own business, www.nobraineronline.com, and both of us have been working a lot. I have written a lot of blog entries in my head, mostly in the shower or while I'm in the car. They just never seem to get transcribed here. I will try to be better about that.

Mostly this is a storm update, because as you might remember, spring brings lots of crazy storms to Nebraska. So far, the really severe weather has bypassed us. There have been some tornadoes, but nothing like Hallam. Mostly hail and flooding problems. Grand Island had baseball-sized hail last week, and the police were rescuing people from their roofs! I found these pics the other day from a storm chaser's website. Check them out if you want to see what kind of storm can produce baseball-sized hail. This is one of my favorites. We personally haven't seen anything like this because Lincoln isn't flat enough to see that far into the distance (even though Lincoln is flat by east coast comparison).

Last month's Blog.
