retreat recap: fair isle

I usually don’t write about retreat experiences because my mind goes to such a peaceful and relaxing place that a small blog post doesn’t ever seem to do it justice. But there were a few things this weekend that I need to share. First up: the fair isle class.

knitting retreat fair isle class

Thank goodness this was the first class on the schedule because it took a lot of brain power. I knew I was going to be knitting with two yarns, but hadn’t really thought about the how: with two hands…at the same time…picking and throwing. I have never knit the English/American way before!

The teacher was great. She showed us how to do it and somehow we all did—just like that. Following a chart helped keep my mind off of Oh My God I’m Knitting With Two Hands and it just clicked. Once I got the tension in both yarns correct, it was smooth sailing.

My mind is already racing with design ideas. Plus, there’s a whole new world of patterns that are now possible. First on the list is a new fall hat for Bella using the chart we used in class. I can’t wait!

crafty retreat

I spent this weekend thrifting and crafting and it was lovely! My friend Kaitlyn of Owl People organized a getaway at a local bed and breakfast for those of us who needed some time away from home to concentrate on our work.

Before the event, Kelly of refibered and I met up for some early morning thrifting. (I think Goodwill’s 99 cent sale has officially become a standing date for us.) Then we headed over to the B&B for an afternoon and evening filled with creativity. So many crafts were represented: crochet, cross stitch, sewing, scrapbooking, decoupage, floral arranging. The next morning, Kelly and I checked out a Flea Market/Antiques Show before heading home.

This was such a great idea and everyone who attended insisted this be a biannual event. I know I’ll definitely be attending again!

knitting homework

Last night I was all ready to settle down with the sock I posted yesterday when I remembered that I had homework to do! I’m going on a little knitting retreat this weekend. It’s a local retreat — only 30 minutes away — with beautiful gardens and meditation paths. I’ll have my own room and bathroom. Meals are included. Doesn’t that sound lovely? The best part, though, will be guilt-free knitting! There will even be a few classes, which explains why I had to do homework. I can’t wait!

stash: Yep, you guessed it! My swatch yarn is thrifted from goodwill. It’s part of my acrylic collection for making amigurumi.
