your daughter has new artwork

I love getting email with this in the subject line: “Your daughter has new artwork!”

Not all of the art projects from school come home right away. They are saved and put together in a book that the children bring home on the last day of school. In the meantime, parents get emails of the artwork so they can see what the children have been creating.

I love these little owls. The description that came with this painting said: “Students made these Snowy Owls by using different painting and printmaking techniques. Can you see how we used pieces of cardboard to print the branches in our trees? Or the way we used the “wrong end” of a paintbrush to create the falling snow? How about our thumbprints that became the owls sitting in the trees?”

My daughter is a big fan of Ed Emberly’s thumbprint book series. (amazon link) I’m guessing she loved this project.

my daughter’s second art show

You may remember the excitement of my daughter’s first art show last year. Well, this summer she did the full-day elementary art camp and had a blast. Once again, the campers exhibited their artwork, but this year they did so at the Sheldon Museum of Art. She was pretty excited.

In addition to showing us all of her work, she took us on a tour of some of her favorite exhibits that she visited earlier in the week. She was so excited and proud. It was adorable.

I still need to write about the other camps she’s taken this summer. She came home from science camp exclaiming she wanted to be a scientist, or maybe an artist that draws science pictures. This week was insect camp. She brought home a jar of mealy worms, which I’ve been told are really dark winged beetle larvae, and tomorrow they are having cricket cookies for a snack. Oh, my!

my daughter’s first art gallery opening

Last week my daughter attended art camp at the children’s museum. Friday afternoon they created a gallery for the kids to exhibit their work. My daughter was beyond excited. You see, she wants to be an Artist when she grows up. This was her first Show.

She did an amazing amount of work in one week’s worth of mornings. She really enjoyed learning about pointillism and her favorite paintings (the top one titled: Birds and the one of the big flower) are hanging in her room. My favorite, however, is the painting on foil titled: Cat Hanging on a Tree.

This is my daughter’s second camp at the Lincoln Children’s Museum. They do such an incredible job with the kids. If you are local, I encourage you to check them out.

embroidered sun pillow

A few months ago, my daughter was drawing at her easel while I was making dinner. She said, “Look, Mom! A sun!” Not only was it a sun, but it was her very first face, complete with two eyes, a nose and a smile. Since then, she’s drawn lots of suns with faces: fat ones, small ones, some even with freckles. This one is special, though. This one was the first.

I decided to share her sun with her grandparents for Christmas. I took a photo of her original artwork, printed it and traced over it with a marker. Then I taped it to a window, taped the fabric over the paper, and traced it with disappearing ink. After embroidering it, I sewed it up into a pillow cover.

I hope to make one for myself this year. Maybe a smaller version for her room? She loves her sun and has the printout taped to her wall. I’ve got the original tucked away for safe keeping.

stash: Everything except the pillow forms came from my stash. The upholstery fabric colors were perfect for this project and I used quite a bit of yellow embroidery thread.
