confession: this is not how my desk really looks

I want to be a clean desk person.

What a Messy Desk Says About You assures me my cluttered workspace is good thing. Messy desks generate more creative ideas. They inspire you to break free from tradition. They produce fresh insights.

All that is good, but secretly I’d like to look like the kind of person who would choose the apple and gym over the candy bar.

Original post about my desk is here.

I found my daughter’s scarf. It was on the lost and found table at school. She’s no longer wearing it, though, because she likes the fleece scarf better. You saw that coming, didn’t you?

noro stockinette cowl

Of course, I had just started working on a cowl to match her hat and mittens. Will she wear it when it’s finished? Maybe if I line it with fleece.

This week I crocheted a little flower bookmark for a friend. I mailed it to her “just because.”

I wish I did things like this more often, but I tend to get wrapped up in my own little world. I’m going to try and change that.

What about you?

updated to add: This is my standard bookmark pattern. I replaced the ornament with “Daisies” from Crochet Embellishments. There’s a similar pattern online here.

this moment

In my creative space today I’m working on the border for the wagon wheel baby blanket. It’s been almost a year since I started this project. Yikes! I really lost momentum when it came to seaming the squares.

Now they’re all together and the first round of the border is finished. I’m just hdc-ing around until I run out of black yarn, which was reclaimed from a different sweater. I hope to have a finished pic very soon!

In my creative space today, and this week, I’ve been working on Pioneer Woman’s photography assignment: black and white. This is the first time I’ve participated in one of her assignments. Every time I post a picture that I think is really great, I am immediately humbled as I take a look at the other shots. Some make me laugh out loud, some get me a little choked up. All of them are pretty excellent.

Here are my contributions so far:

I’m not sure how our Summer got so busy. Kindergarten starts soon and I should be soaking up these last few weeks of kid activities. But I have to admit, I’m ready for some alone time.

The only creativity I’ve been able to fit into our schedule is behind the lens. Last week I managed to sneak away for a walk in the Sheldon Sculpture Garden while my daughter was at camp. I took lots of sculpture photos, but I’m really loving my nature shots.

I’ll be back to sewing, knitting, thrifting and crocheting soon enough. (It’s too hot for wool yarn anyway!) In the meantime, if you see a crazy lady with a camera kneeling in a bed of roses, stop and say hello!

good luck cowl knitting

I did a little bit of airplane knitting while on vacation. It’s not exactly mindless knitting, but it distracted me from all of the stormy turbulence we encountered.

I really love the pattern and the design would probably “pop” more with a solid color yarn.

I’m no longer ripping back tiny mistakes if they aren’t too noticeable. I’ve figured out how to yarn over here and there to hide them pretty good.

I started this cowl in February. At this rate, it might get finished before the cold weather hits.

I’ve got a new camera. It’s fancy. (Click on photos for larger images)

Unlike my point-and-shoot, I’m going to have to read the manual for this one.

But that hasn’t stopped me from just diving in!

my creative space homemade yogurt scones

It’s picnic season and I’ve started thinking about snacks that are easy to pack when we’re going to the park. I’ve always loved scones, but I like them light and fluffy, not like some of the hard ones you find in coffee shops.

I’m also kind of picky about their nutritional value. I don’t like baking with a lot of heavy cream or butter. I was drawn to Alice Waters’ recipe because she doesn’t use butter. I’ve been replacing the heavy cream with different ratios of yogurt and milk.

The first batch I made tasted good out of the oven, but were kind of dry the next day. The second batch wasn’t that great at all. This third batch is awesome out of the oven. If they are just as good tomorrow, I’m declaring success!
