my creative space
I’ve got some tough decisions in my creative space today. I was given this beautiful hand-knit sweater from my friend Tana. It’s big. Really big. Too big to be refashioned with my ’80s sweater tutorial. She was thinking I could use it to make a felted tote bag. I can’t bear felting it. The stitch work is so beautiful.

This is what I’m thinking: take apart the seams and make smaller bags out of the front and back each. I would serge the edges to keep them from unraveling. I really like the colorway of the yarn, which is Cascade 220. I think I might unravel the sleeves and use the wool for some granny square scarves.
What do you think? What would you do with it?

You just reminded me I have two cable knit cotton jumpers I’ve been meaning to make into cushion covers – for years. So, that’s what I would do with this jumper, make it into a cushion. So lovely and snuggle on the couch.
It really is beautiful. If it were mine, I would maybe try making a child’s vest from this tutorial from Made: http://www.dana-made-it.com/2008/07/tutorial-boys-sweater-vest-from-mans.html
I agree the stitch work is lovely. I’d make a lovely squishy sofa cushion.
I’m sure you will find something wonderful to make from this rather ornate jumper. Perhaps you could make two cushions, keep one & give one to your friend? xo
I agree. It’s definitely too pretty to felt. I like your bag ideas. I’d probably be tempted to felt the sleeves though and turn them into stuffed critters or smaller change purses.
I know what you mean about the sweater being too nice to felt. I found a fabulous hand-knit wool cabled sweater at the thrift store for $2! I hoped my husband would wear it, but he doesn’t care for it, and I’ve been trying to decide what to do with it…
I like the idea of sewing bags out of it. Maybe the sleeves would like to become legwarmers for your daughter? Or baby sweater pants, oh, how I love sweater pants!
