wardrobe refashion: trying to keep my pledge

I made a deal with myself that I was going to lose some weight before fall. I didn’t want to have to go out and buy new clothes just because the ones in my closet didn’t fit. I was doing really good until vacation. Pretty much all of the weight I lost at the end of the summer came back home with me on the plane. When we landed, there was snow on the ground. I couldn’t put it off any longer. I had to buy some new pants.

My wardrobe refashion pledge actually made me feel like this process would be easier. At a thrift store, you’ve got all kinds of brands and sizes on the same rack. I figured I would have a better chance at finding something than at a single brand store. I was wrong. It took 3 different stores and trying on about 20-30 different pairs at each store, to find one pair of jeans and two pairs of corduroys that fit.

Although this was harder work than just heading over to the mall, I feel much better with the quality of clothing I bought. Those capris that I complained about last spring barely lasted the season. I am not about to put that much time and effort into clothes that don’t last.

So why am I having a hard time trying to keep my pledge?
I know that if I walked into The Gap and found a pair of pants that fit perfectly, I’d have to buy a pair in every style and color. Seriously. And I won’t lie to you. I’ve been saving my Get out of Refashionista Jail Free card just in case. Pants that fit well make or break how someone looks, in my opinion. I can look past ratty sneakers or a worn t-shirt any day, but I can’t be busting out of my jeans. I just can’t.

What about you?
Are you fed up with the lack of consistent sizing in women’s clothing? Do brand new clothes last more than one season for you? Am I the only one who gets this darn frustrated over a pair of pants?

  1. I agree, good pants are hard to find and expensive when you do find them. I guess that’s why most of my wardrobe is old, oversized, or stretchy!

  2. Soooo frustrated! It seems like you have to choose between granny pants and pants for 16 year old girls that barely cover the butt when standing, not to mention sitting down. Then there is the problem of my waist, which doesn’t exist, really, so there is nothing for the pants to grip onto and I am constantly pulling them up.

  3. I hate to say it, but the best jeans I’ve ever purchased– and the ones I’ve been able to wear the longest– have always been the most expensive ones. I suppose $90 jeans don’t seem that extreme when you wear them regularly for 10 years, though!

    I hatehatehatehate buying pants.

  4. I must confess, I havent owned anything other than GAP jeans since high school. I may pay $50-$60 for a pair each year but they last for years and it takes me only minutes to pick out a pair that fits perfect. I still have some that are going on 10 years old.

  5. Buying trousers is awful! And buying jeans makes me cry – I HATE IT! I’m with you – if I find pants that fit then I’ll buy a pile of them because it’s a rare occurrence. And I have never met ANYONE that can go into a shop and buy trousers off the rack – who do they make them for?

Glad to know that others out there share your pain!

  6. I agree buying clothes in general is a PITA. I recently lost 25lbs and have had to buy new clothes, all from thrift stores (came here from Wardrobe refashion). I currently wear size 2,3,4 & 5 jeans/pants. All fit in different brands. It’s crazy. there is no standard in sizing so the manufacturers can make them any size they want. Crazy!

  7. I totally agree with you and the other comments left. I hate buying pants. It’s been years since I have been able to find something that fits well and looks good and is comfortable. I did the thrift store thing too, but came up empty handed. They make them for tall people too. I’m not short 5’5″, but I have to hem every pair of pants I buy. Not fair! Who has legs that long? Oh, the people with the really long arms that the long sleeved sweaters are made for :-0
